Statement from Georgia Farm Bureau President Gerald Long on Special Master Paul Kelly’s Georgia/Florida Water Litigation Recommendation

MACON, Ga. – The following can be attributed to Georgia Farm Bureau President Gerald Long in response to Special Master Paul J. Kelly’s recommendation to the U.S. Supreme Court for the dismissal of Florida’s water rights litigation against Georgia.

“Georgia Farm Bureau is pleased that Special Master Paul Kelly’s recommendation acknowledges the water conservation practices Georgia’s agriculture community has followed for many years. We appreciate that Judge Kelly recognized Georgia farmers are good stewards of the water God has given them and that they are using it efficiently as they grow crops to help feed and clothe the world. Multiple state agencies, water organizations, UGA Cooperative Extension, Georgia Farm Bureau and Georgia farmers have worked together to collect data that documents the accurate amount of water farmers use to irrigate their crops, develop efficient irrigation technology and implement it on their farms. Our nation’s security depends on being able to feed itself, so it’s crucial that farmers continue to have access to adequate water to meet America’s need for safe and affordable food products. Georgia farmers do not take their access to water for granted and will remain committed to using smart water practices across the state, particularly in the Southwest Georgia region.”
