Senate votes down aid for farms damaged by Hurricane Michael

On April 1, the U.S. Senate took two votes on a disaster aid package that would provide disaster assistance for farms and landowners damaged by Hurricane Michael last October and other disasters around the country. Neither H.R. 268, which passed the House in January, nor a substitute bill submitted by Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Alabama), received enough votes to pass.
“Washington has reached a new low,” said Sen. David Perdue of Georgia. “It’s been nearly six months since Hurricane Michael ravaged Georgia and other states across the country, and Congress has failed to help the very people it claims to represent.
Perdue said efforts would continue to get help for those harmed by natural disasters.
“We’re not giving up. This is not the end of this tale,” Perdue said. “I want the farmers and the local bankers to understand we are going to continue this fight. To the people who this has affected – don’t lose heart. We will get it done.”
