Powders, drink mixes, trendy exercises and more- there are always new advertisements and messaging promoting ways to lead you to a healthier lifestyle. Thankfully, I can't be fooled into thinking these current trends are a quick fix to living a healthy lifestyle, I know I need high quality lean protein, fruits and vegetables, lots of water and regular exercise.
Instead of scooping a protein substitute out of a container, I head to the beef counter at my grocery store. There are over 30 certified lean beef cut options in the marketplace. When I see cuts like Top Sirloin Steak, Strip Steak or 95% Lean Ground Beef, I know each of these cuts have less than 10 grams of total fat, 4.5 grams or less of saturated fat and less than 95 mg of cholesterol. When I consume a 3-ounce serving of beef I know I'm getting 25 grams of protein and 10 essential nutrients at only about 150 calories per serving. These are the kind of numbers I like to hear, and the great taste of beef keeps me coming back every time.
May is National Beef Month and always a great time of year to learn something new about beef and more specifically, Georgia's beef industry. Many people think you can't have beef and live a healthy life, but the truth is, beef IS part of a healthy lifestyle. If you buy a 6-ounce steak at the store or in a restaurant keep to the 3-ounce serving and use the rest for leftovers. Turn your steak dinner into a breakfast burrito or a steak salad for lunch. This will give you a chance to incorporate different ingredients, but most importantly you will have an opportunity to stretch your dollar which I'm sure is something we are all looking to do.
There are a lot of great resources on Beef It's What's for Dinner and we encourage you to check it out for nutrition information, recipe ideas and much more!
