At-Home Ag Education Resources for Kids and Parents

Posted on March 23, 2020 12:00 AM

The Covid pandemic has canceled everything from birthday parties to school classrooms, but one silver lining is the fact that many of us are staying home during the week and weekend and spending more time with family.

We know it’s difficult to not stress, but we encourage you to discover the blessing in disguise. Enjoy this unexpected gift.  Get outdoors with your kids. Learn about how the world works.  Agriculture offers a fun framework for learning about science, math, history and more. Let us help you connect with your kids and learn life skills at the same time!

Here are some great resources to get you started.

Ag-Tivities with Lauren

Lauren Goble, GFB's Ag in the Classroom Coordinator, is offering up some fun "ag-tivities" this summer that are designed to help kids learn more about agriculture! Check out a few of them here:

Story Time on the Farm

Join Lauren Goble, GFB's Ag in the Classroom Coordinator, as she reads "Right This Very Minute", a table-to-farm book about food and farming, while on a farm! After the book is over, take a peek at a real strawberry farm and hear from one of its farmers who is also a large animal vet. Help children learn more about where their food comes from - right this very minute! Watch Now.

Next, listen to "Can-Do Cowkids", a new children's book by the Georgia Beef Board, read on the farm by Georgia farmer Kyle Moore. Watch Now.

Learn About Dairy

From the cheese in our casseroles to the butter on our biscuit, dairy adds flavor to our meals and enriches our lives. Here are some tools to learn more about how dairy is produced in Georgia. Get more fun facts about dairy here.

Learn About Georgia’s Forests

First, take your kids on an interactive journey through the working forests of Georgia to learn about forest ecosystems, food webs, life cycles, and much more, through this robust Virtual Learning Journey presented by the Georgia Forestry Association and GPB Education. Then head outside for a real life scavenger hunt!

Have Fun in the Kitchen

This is a great time to get your kids engaged in the kitchen! You can find a wide variety of easy and fun recipes to make with kids in GFB’s Ag in the Classroom Recipes section! Each recipe comes with a kid-friendly activity.

Hit a Home Run with Georgia Peanuts

Georgia Peanuts will be celebrating National Ag Day by reading their new children's book, "A Home Run for Peanuts", starring Jake and his farm dog Max. Check out this special reading by the book's author, Amanda Radke.

Dig in the Dirt – Make a Pizza Garden!

Rainy day? Play an Ag Game Online.

Print Your Own Agriculture-Themed Board Game

The American Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture has created a cute board game your can print and play at home with the family. Download it here.

Use snack time to learn about food

Visit a Farm and Meet a Farmer
