UNDERWOOD WINS STATE GRAND CHAMPION MARKET GILT AWARD
MACON, Ga. – Jeff Davis County 4-H member Chanleigh Underwood won the Grand Champion Market Gilt Award with her crossbred hog, Angel, at the 2014 Georgia Junior National Livestock Show held Feb. 22 in Perry, Ga. This is the second consecutive year Underwood has won the award.
Underwood was one of about 1,600 Georgia 4-H and FFA members who competed in the annual show held Feb. 19-22 at the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter in Perry. The livestock exhibitors showed more than 2,000 head of cattle, sheep and hogs in showmanship and species competitions.
As the grand champion, Underwood won a $1,500 prize sponsored by Georgia Farm Bureau, which sponsored the grand champion prizes for all species competitions at the show.
“Georgia Farm Bureau is proud to sponsor these awards because these children are developing life skills by taking care of their show animals,” said GFB President Zippy Duvall. “Georgia Farm Bureau is dedicated to helping Georgia’s 4-H and FFA programs because what these programs do for the youth of Georgia is important. We’re glad to be able to give back to the youth programs that are developing agriculture’s future leaders.”
Underwood, a student at Jeff Davis Elementary School, is the daughter of Chad and Autumn Underwood. She has been showing hogs five years.
Founded in 1937, Georgia Farm Bureau is the largest general farm organization in the state. The organization has 158 county offices, and its volunteer members actively participate in local, district and state activities that promote agriculture awareness to their non-farming neighbors.
