RAINWATER WINS STATE GRAND CHAMPION MARKET BARROW AWARD

MACON, Ga. – Houston County 4-H member Abbi Rainwater won the Grand Champion Market Barrow Award with her Hampshire hog at the 2014 Georgia Junior National Livestock Show held Feb. 21 in Perry, Ga.

Rainwater was one of about 1,600 Georgia 4-H and FFA members who competed in the annual show held Feb. 19-22 at the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter in Perry. The livestock exhibitors showed more than 2,000 head of cattle, sheep and hogs in showmanship and species competitions.

As the grand champion, Rainwater won a $1,500 prize sponsored by Georgia Farm Bureau, which sponsored the grand champion prizes for all species competitions during the show.

“Georgia Farm Bureau is proud to sponsor these awards because these children are developing life skills by taking care of their show animals,” said GFB President Zippy Duvall. “Georgia Farm Bureau is dedicated to helping Georgia’s 4-H and FFA programs because what these programs do for the youth of Georgia is important. We’re glad to be able to give back to the youth programs that are developing agriculture’s future leaders.”

Rainwater, the daughter of Brian and Natalie Rainwater, is a student at David Perdue Elementary School and has been showing for four years.

Founded in 1937, Georgia Farm Bureau is the largest general farm organization in the state. The organization has 158 county offices, and its volunteer members actively participate in local, district and state activities that promote agriculture awareness to their non-farming neighbors.
