DAVIS WINS STATE GRAND CHAMPION BREEDING HEIFER AWARD

 

MACON, Ga. – Colquitt County FFA member Lakyn Davis won the Grand Champion Breeding Heifer Award with her registered Angus heifer at the 2014 Georgia Junior National Livestock Show held in Perry, Ga., Feb. 21.
           

Davis was one of about 1,600 Georgia 4-H and FFA members who competed in the annual show held at the Georgia National Fairgrounds & Agricenter in Perry Feb. 19-22 The livestock exhibitors showed more than 2,000 head of cattle, sheep and hogs in showmanship and species competitions.
           

As the grand champion, Davis won a $2,500 prize sponsored by Georgia Farm Bureau, which sponsored the grand champion prizes for all species competitions during the show.
           

“Georgia Farm Bureau is proud to sponsor these awards because these children are developing life skills by taking care of their show animals,” said GFB President Zippy Duvall. “Georgia Farm Bureau is dedicated to helping Georgia’s 4-H and FFA programs because what these programs do for the youth of Georgia is important. We’re glad to be able to give back to the youth programs that are developing agriculture’s future leaders.”
           

Lakyn, the daughter of Bart and Paula Davis of Doerun, is a senior at Colquitt County High School and has been showing since she was in the fourth grade.
           

Founded in 1937, Georgia Farm Bureau is the largest general farm organization in the state. The organization has 158 county offices, and its volunteer members actively participate in local, district and state activities that promote agriculture awareness to their non-farming neighbors.
